Yreka serves as the county seat for Siskiyou County. Yreka is the largest full service community along I-5 between the Oregon border and Redding. Yreka is located in the northern most corner of the Shasta Valley, and is only 22 miles from the Oregon California border.
Gold was discovered in Yreka in 1851, which at the time was called Shasta Butte City. There is some speculation as to how Yreka got its name. Some say it was Ieka the Indian name for White Mountain. Some speculate it was from an upside down bakery sign hanging in town. Siskiyou County courthouse has the largest display of gold south of Alaska.
Yreka has over seventy-five homes built in the 1800's that have been preserved. The residential district of Third Street has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places in Washington, D.C. The historical/commercial district of Miner Street offers visitors a view into Yreka's past with buildings maintained from the late 1800's and early 1900's. The historic district of Miner Street is lined with unique shops and restaurants. Yreka is a great place to live and visit.
